I have the best memories of this book. I would climb up into my dad’s lap, and he would start the rhythmic rhyme,

Hand
hand
fingers
thumb

One thumb
One thumb
Drumming on a drum.

It reads like a poem, and the little girl version of me loved every word. I still do. And I was sure to let my boys climb up into my lap for the same rollicking fun. We couldn’t help but drum on the pages with the dum-ditty-dum-ditty-dum-dum-dum refrain.

We enjoyed the book so much that I decided to write a Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb unit study. Thanks to Rose Ann Kuhns for helping with the lessons and printable lapbook.

Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb Unit Study Lessons

Here is a sample of the lessons included in the Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb unit study:

Bible: Praise the Lord!
Psalms 47:1 proclaims, “O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph!” Sing some favorite Bible songs while clapping and praising God.

Social Studies: Manners
“Hello Jack. Hello Jake. Shake hands. Shake hands-shake, shake, shake!” When we meet new people or old friends, it is appropriate to shake their hand. Encourage your child to shake hands with people when they greet them. If desired, you can practice with stuffed animals.

Language Arts: Learning Letters
Choose a letter to learn this week (M is for Monkey or H is for Hand). Teach your student the sound the letter makes. Find objects in your house that start with the letter.

Science: Monkeys!
Check out some monkey books at the library. If your child isn’t ready to sit for a non-fiction book, just peruse the pictures together. You can discuss what monkeys eat with your child. In the book, a monkey picks an apple, another picks a plum. Well, monkeys do eat fruit! Different monkeys in different areas of the world eat whatever fruit grows in that area. They also consume nuts, eggs, seeds, leaves, bamboo, insects and corn.

Science: Health
“Hands with handkerchiefs blow, blow, blow…”
When we sneeze, we need to cover our mouths and noses to keep the germs at a minimum. Discuss this with your child. You can also talk about the proper way to use a tissue and that we should wash our hands after we sneeze.
