The Cat in the Hat Printables and Activities
This downloadable file includes these printables and activities:
Science Activity: Rain and the Water Cycle
Why does it rain? Where does the rain come from?
Tell your student that rain is a part of the water cycle. The sun pulls water into the sky to form clouds (evaporation). When the clouds get too full, they let go of the water, making rain (precipitation). Use the printable water cycle mini-book to reinforce this concept.
Language Arts Activity: Listmaking
Discuss rainy days and fun things you can do on a rainy day at your own house. Make a list on the printable provided.
Spelling Activity: Word Building
The Cat in the Hat is loaded with easy to read words. Give your student some letter tiles and let him spell out some of the words from the book. Use the printable provided, if desired.
Reading Activity: Rhyming Words
Sort the cards on the cat mat. The words that rhyme with cat are rat, hat, pat, sat, fat, mat, and bat.
Reading Activity: Cat in the Hat Word Find
Use visual discrimination skills to find the simple words from the book in the word find.
Social Studies Activity: Stranger Safety
Discuss with your student what he should do if a stranger knocks on the door. Also, discuss why it is important to keep doors locked. This may be a good time to discuss when/how to call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.
Character Building Activity: Telling the Truth
Discuss this last question in the book: “What would you do if your mother asked you?” What should Sally and her brother tell their mother? (the truth!) Talk to your student about the importance of always telling you the truth. Discuss the Bible verses and quote on the cards provided.
P.E. Activity: Balance
For a fun balancing exercise, pick something for your child to try to balance on his/her head (just like the cat in the book). This is a fantastic way to put gross motor muscles a work out!
Hat Game
Find a large hat and put in various small items. Blindfold the child and have them reach in, touch an object and guess what it is without looking.
Math Activity: Clear the Board Game
Give your student 10 markers (small erasers, chocolate chips, little LEGO bricks, etc.). Let him place the markers anywhere he wants on the board. Give your student a pair of dice. As he rolls the numbers that are marked, he removes the markers from the board. When all the markers have been removed, he wins the game. This can be played with two players if you print two boards.
Fine Motor Activity: Cat in the Hat Maze
Put your student’s fine motor skills to work with this fun maze!
