Goodnight Moon. How many of us have the words to this simple book memorized?
In the great green room
There was a telephone
And a red balloon
And a picture of
The cow jumping over the moon
Both of my boys would repeatedly bring this book to me to read to them. The bold colors, the rhyming text, and the little mouse on each page–all of these things caused them to love this classic by Margaret Wise Brown.
Even though the words are simple, they serve as the base for many preschool lessons: colors, shapes, rhyming words, and more.
Our Goodnight Moon lapbook will give you the tools you need to bring these preschool lessons to life.
Thanks to Robin Diedrichs for helping me create the resources for Goodnight Moon.

What Color Was the Balloon? Hotdog Book
Use these instructions to make this book.
Discuss colors with your student. What color was the balloon? What is her favorite color? What color was the room in the story? What are the colors of the objects found throughout your home?
M Is for . . . Shutterfold Book
Use this book to introduce or review the Letter M. What sound does M make? What words start with M? (moon, milk, mail, and monkey).
Learning Right and Left (with Mittens)
In the book there are mittens. Use this as an opportunity to introduce the concept of right and left.
My Phone Number
“In the great green room there was a telephone.” Take some time this week to teach your student his phone number.
The Moon Looks Different Wheel
Use this moon wheel to introduce your student to some of the moon’s phases. You may want to check out a book about the moon from your local library.
“Hey, Diddle, Diddle” Nursery Rhyme
The cow jumping over the moon is found in a picture in this story. Does your student know this nursery rhyme? Take some time this week to learn it together.
There is also a “Hey, Diddle, Diddle” coloring page provided in the printable file.
Three Bears Sorting Game
Your student may also spy the three bears in this story. Does she know the story of the three bears?
Read Goldilocks and the Three Bears to your student this week and let her use the cards to sort them into three piles: items belonging to Papa Bear, items belonging to Mama Bear, and items belonging to Baby Bear.
Number Clock
Is there a clock in the room in Goodnight Moon?
Assemble and use the clock provided to help your child with number recognition.
Rhyming Words House
Follow the instructions in the file to assemble the rhyming words house. Can your student find the rhyming pairs? (Rhyming pairs include: house/mouse, chair/bear, and kitten/mitten.)
I Spy a Circle
Does your student spy any circles in the illustrations of Goodnight Moon? Find and count them!
Use the wheel provided to reinforce circles and things that are round.
Goodnight Moon Sorting Cards
After reading Goodnight Moon several times, let your student sort the cards into two groups: objects that were told “goodnight” and objects that were not told “goodnight.”
