This lapbook includes printable activities based on the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

The story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz chronicles the adventures of a young farm girl named Dorothy in the magical Land of Oz, after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their Kansas home by a tornado.

Here is a list of ideas as your read through The Wonderful Wizard of Oz:

Learn More About Tornadoes
A tornado took Dorothy to Oz. Learn more about tornadoes.
A tornado is a funnel shaped cloud that touches the ground. It acts like a huge vacuum sucking up anything in its path.
A meteorologist is a scientist who studies the weather. They warn people when a storm may turn into a tornado.
Tornado Watch: means a tornado may form. People should be alert for tornado warnings.
Tornado Warning: means a tornado has been seen. Take cover in basement or window free area immediately.

  • Check out books from the library about tornadoes and weather. You can also look online. 
  • Make a tornado in 2 liter bottles.
  • Teach your preschoolers the letter T.

Toto
Toto is one of the characters in the story. Your student can learn basic dog facts:
There are hundreds  of kinds of dogs. A kind of dog is a breed.
A group of puppies is a litter. An average litter is 5-6 puppies.
Dog tails help them balance. They also show feelings with their tails.
Dogs can hear very quiet sounds. Dog noses are wet and can smell really well.
A dog has 42 teeth!
Dogs bark as a way to talk.
Dogs can pull sleds, herd sheep, help people who can’t see, and be a good friend.
Toto was Dorothy’s friend. He helped her as they traveled through Oz.

  • Learn about pet care– especially how to take care of a puppy.
  • Teach your preschooler the letter D.

Tin Woodman
The Tin Woodman wishes for a heart. Learn more about the human heart.

Basic heart facts:
If you could stretch all your blood vessels out in a line, they would go around the world twice!
Your heart squeezes blood through your body every minute of every day. It never sleeps.
A heart beats faster when you are doing active things. Running and playing help exercise your heart.
Blood gets oxygen from the lungs and delivers it to the rest of the body, then circles back through the heart for more oxygen.
Blood can only flow one way; trapdoors called valves keep it from going backwards.
Hearts have four rooms, called chambers, for blood to go through.
You can listen to a heartbeat by putting your ear to the middle of someone’s chest.

  • Check out books from the library and learn more about the heart. 
  • Read scriptures about the heart (Genesis 6:5, Deuteronomy 6:5, I Samuel 16:7, Psalm 9:1)
  • Teach your preschooler the shape of a heart.

Scarecrow
Scarecrow is hoping for a brain. Learn more about the human brain.

Brain basics:
The brain is the control center for the body. It sends and receives messages through nerves.
Your brain helps keep your body systems working. The brain keeps you breathing, blinking, digesting food, and it keeps your heart beating.
The brain is split down the middle into two sides, called hemispheres. The left hemisphere is better with words and numbers; the right is better with art and pictures.

  • Learn about crows.
  • Read scriptures about wisdom (Psalm 110:1, Psalms 90:12, tons of verses in Proverbs)
  • Teach your preschoolers the letter S.

Dorothy
Dorothy is the main character in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. You can use her adventure as a springboard to learn more about Kansas and to learn cardinal directions. You can also add a Map of Oz to your lapbook.

Cowardly Lion
The Cowardly Lion is wishing for courage. Learn more about courage.

  • Learn about lions. Try our Lions Lapbook.
  • Read scriptures on courage (Psalm 27:1, Psalm 31:24, I Chronicles 28:20)
  • Teach your preschooler the letter L.
