When my youngest son was almost six, he was struggling with reading. He had known his letters and sounds for two or three years, but blending letters together wasn’t clicking.
He was frustrated and discouraged.
I was frustrated and discouraged.
We needed something different.
That’s when I found Reading Eggs.
Reading Eggs allowed us to take a break from traditional curriculum while continuing to build his reading skills and confidence in a low pressure, low stress way.
Before I knew it, Simon was blending sounds and reading words while having fun.
That was twelve years ago, and I am still thankful for the progress he made with Reading Eggs and for the success he experienced. That success laid the foundation for positive attitude toward reading—one that he maintains today.
Best Features of Reading Eggs
Reading Eggs Is Interactive and Fun
The program uses a huge variety of games, songs, and animated characters to teach your child to read. These features make learning enjoyable and keep your kids interested in reading. My son never complained when it was time for Reading Eggs!
Reading Eggs Motivates Your Student
Reading Eggs is designed to keep kids wanting more. At the end of each lesson a critter hatches out of an egg. Kids want to discover and collect these creatures, so this keeps them reading.
Additionally, when kids complete an activity, they are awarded golden eggs. They can use the golden eggs to play games in the arcade or to buy fun things for their house and character. My son loved choosing items to personalize his character and decorate his house.
In order to buy more things for his character or house, he had to earn more eggs which kept him wanting to complete more lessons.
Reading Eggs Is Convenient
Reading Eggs can be accessed from anywhere at any time as long as you have a device with an internet connection. It’s easy to implement, even if you are away from home. It doesn’t matter if you are waiting at the doctor’s office or on a family vacation, your child can constantly continue his journey to learning to read.
If you have multiple kids learning to read, Reading Eggs allows up to four children to use the program under the same subscription at the same time on different devices.
Benefits of Reading Eggs
Your Student Begins Reading Right Away!
The child starts reading words before they learn all the letter sounds. In lesson three the child learns the word I and the sound /am/. This enables the child to start reading words quickly—what a wonderful confidence booster!
Your Student Builds a Solid Reading Foundation
Reading Eggs covers letter sounds, capital and lower case letters, blends, CVC words, CVCC words, high-frequency sight words, and more! This simple step-by-step sequence gives your student a strong foundation in phonics and reading.
Reading Eggs Tips
Here are a few tips if you decide to try Reading Eggs:
I started Simon at the beginning of the program (even though he already knew his letters and sounds). This was the right choice because it gave him immediate success which built confidence. No frustration! It also gave his brain a chance to solidify any missing skills which led to mastery later.
Note: If your child is not frustrated with his reading progress, you may want to take the placement test. The test can be reset, so no problem if your child needs to retake it.
Simon and I did the majority of the lessons together. I think this factored into Simon’s success, too. I had him slow down and read words rather than just guess.
He did get additional time each day to play Reading Eggs on his own, and he looked forward to this time. He used it to revisit old lessons, earn more golden eggs, shop at the Plaza, deck out his house, and have fun at Puzzle Park. I loved that he was begging me for these extra doses of learning!
